Indoor Environmental Professionals / Building Biologists / Myco/Micro-biologists
Note: Toxic Mould Support Australia does not favor one group of professionals over another for the investigation of water damage and microbial growth in buildings. Neither do we personally vouch for any of the professionals below.
Indoor Environmental Professionals (IEPs) should be able identify the source and extent of water damage, moisture and, if necessary, amount and location of microbial growth. They can also determine the required scope of works to return the property to pre-event condition, and after remediation, provide post remediation verification. They may send mould samples to micro/myco-biologists or other laboratories for analysis and quantification.
Microbiologist and mycologists have special training in the field of microbiology (fungi and bacteria) and can provide similar services to IEP as well as analysis of fungal samples using culture and microscopy.

The ACAC is a body that certifies IEPs and remediators in the US and around the world including a growing number of Australians. They have several qualifications for IEPs, from least to most experienced:
CIE(C) – Council-certified Indoor Environmental (Consultant)
CIAQM – Council-certified Indoor Air Quality Manager
CMI – Council-certified Microbial Investigator
CMC – Council-certified Microbial Consultant
CIH – Certified Industrial Hygienist
Visit their Certification page for more.
The Australian College of Environmental Studies (ACES)
Building Biologists will inspect a property not only for water damage and microbial growth but for building design, EMFs, geopathic stress, water quality and other toxins and toxicants.

Australian College of Environmental Studies
In Australia the ACES offers an Advanced Diploma of Building Biology.
One of the modules for the diploma, also available as a stand alone course, is the Mould Testing Technician course. This is the only government accredited mould testing course in Australia.
IICRC Approved School
Courses in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart (Australia). Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch (New Zealand)
ERMI / HERTSMI-2
Environmental Relative Moldiness Index is a test that quantifies the DNA of mould spores and spore equivalents (fragments) in a sample of dust using MSQPCR (Mould Specific Quantified PCR). This is a screening test that can be done by current and prospective homeowners or ideally by IEP/BB/mycologist. ERMI tests for 36 different species of fungi. The HERTSMI-2 score can be calculated from the ERMI report or done as a stand alone test, that looks at 5 species of fungi. The HERTSMI-2 score is endorsed by Dr. Shoemaker as the most accurate building test for CIRS patients (Shoemaker & Lark, 2016).

MouldLab send to their sister laboratory in the USA, Envirobiomics, every Friday, with results expected late the next week. TMSA suggests people express their Swiffer cloth/vacuum kit to arrive at MouldLab by Wednesday or Thursday so it gets there in time for the Friday shipment.
Remediators should follow the industry standard “ANSI/IICRC S520 Standard for Mold Remedation” (2015) at a minimum.
CIRS patients will often need a higher level of remediation than these entail. The protocol to achieve this level is outlined in the Surviving Mold Consensus statement (2016).
